This week, The Ware Center, announced the line-up for the debut of its Opera & Ballet in Cinema Series. This series features live operas and ballets from around the world filmed within the past few months in high-definition and surround sound. All films will be shown on the new digital projection system in Steinman Hall at the Center, located at 42 North Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. The debut kicks off the series — which in the Fall — will also include LIVE simulcasts of similar productions.
The Opera & Ballet in Cinema Series kicks-off on Sunday, April 29th at 6 PM with Puccini’s “La Bohème” – a live opera performance captured on film from the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez, directed by Giancarlo del Monaco and starring Ramon Vargas & Fiorenza Cedolins, this production was filmed on March 13, 2012 in Spain. Here’s what reviewers said, “sets a new bar for cinematic transmission of live opera….” and “It’s so powerful…it feels like you’re watching what Puccini was picturing in his mind’s eye as he was writing the opera.” – CityArts.

June 17 at 5 PM – Bizet’s “Carmen” from Liceu, starring Roberto Alagna, Erwin Schrott & Beatrice Uria-Monzon.
June 27 at 6 PM – “Giselle” from the Royal Ballet, starring Marianela Nunes & Rupert Pennefather.
July 6 at 7:30 PM — Puccini’s “Tosca” from the Royal Opera House in London, starring Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kauffman, Bryn Terfel & Lukas Jakobski.
July 15 at 2 PM — Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” at the Bolshoi Ballet.
August 8 at 7 PM — Verdi’s “Rigoletto” from the Royal Opera House, starring Dimitri Platanias, Ekaterine Siurina, Vittorio Grigolo, Pablo Bemsch & Christine Rice.
August 22 at 7 PM — Verdi’s “La Traviata” starring Renee Fleming.
Ware Center film-goers usually will receive a four-color show program with cast and creative crew, program notes, synopsis of the story, and backstage tid-bits. All performances include an intermission with refreshments and beverages. The program and refreshment breaks are included in the ticket price.
