Market Square Concerts Announces 2013-14 Season

Market Square Concerts will open its 2013-14 season on Saturday, September 21, at 8 pm in Market Square Church with the Cleveland Quartet Award winner, Jasper String Quartet and Stuart Malina, Artistic Director of the Harrisburg Symphony, at the piano. The program will include string quartets by Haydn and Dvorak, as well as the celebrated Piano Quintet by Dmitri Shostakovich.

On Saturday, November 16, at 8 pm in Temple Ohev Sholom, GRAMMY Award winning Parker Quartet returns to Market Square Concerts with a program which offers an interesting juxtaposition of Romantic works by Schubert and Mendelssohn, and the recently commissioned “Capriccio” for string quartet by Harrisburg native, composer Jeremy Gill, who will give a pre-concert talk about his new composition.

The Calefax Reed Quintet from the Netherlands, established over 25 years ago, will perform an unusual program ranging from Bach’s Goldberg variations to Ravel’s Le Tombeu de Couperin on Thursday, January 23, at 8 pm in Temple Ohev Sholom. This program will offer listeners an opportunity to experience two celebrated works from the keyboard repertoire in a world of completely different sonorities.

Violinist Ray Chen, Gold Medal Winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Competition in Belgium, will perform a program of Sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven, as well as several short virtuosic works by Pablo Sarasate on Wednesday, February 26, at 8 pm at Whitaker Center. Born in Australia of Taiwanese descent, Ray Chen is currently living in Philadelphia, where he attended Curtis Institute of Music. He will repeat the same program at the world renowned Salle Gaveau in Paris, shortly after appearing at Market Square Concerts.

On Saturday, March 29, at 8 pm at Whitaker Center pianist Ann Schein, a pupil of the legendary Arthur Rubinstein, will perform a program, which will include music by Beethoven, Ravel, Debussy, Liszt and Chopin. This performance is a part of a mini-residency co-presented by the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, which will include performances of Chopin F Minor Piano Concerto with the HSO on March 22&23, as well as a Piano Masterclass on March 28 at Messiah College..

The final concert of the season will take place on Tuesday, April 29, at 8pm in Market Square Church. Tenor Rufus Muller and critically acclaimed Daedalus Quartet will perform a special program dedicated to the centennial celebration of Benjamin Britten. This concert will be preceded by a pre-concert talk by Dr. Richard Strawser.
