Hershey Area Playhouse to Offer Summer Drama Camps

Hershey Area Playhouse invites children entering grades K-12 to attend summer theatre camps, Monday, June 11, 2012 through Friday, June 22, 2012. The camps will culminate with a final performance on the last day.

“Tell Me a Story” is offered for students entering grades K-1 and will meet from 9:00–10:00 a.m. Campers will learn acting skills using classic tales from many different times and cultures. This is a fast-paced class for early elementary children with an emphasis on developing imaginations through creative dramatics.

“Kids Camp – Calling all Playwrights” will be offered for grades 2-3 and grades 4-6. In the first session, students in grades 2-3 will meet at 9:00 a.m. and activities will conclude at 10:30 a.m. In the second session, students entering grades 4-6 will gather from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Students will explore plot, character and dramatic action as they create their own scripts starting with classic tales and stock characters that have traveled around the world. Students act as both actor and playwright, creating their own original piece with a dash of adventure thrown in. Special visits from stage combat instructor Laurie Miller Petersen will be offered. The final original plays are costumed and performed with lights, sound and special effects.

“Studio Workshop – Classics, Comics & Creatives” will be offered for students grades 7 through 12 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Students will explore in depth acting skills while learning about theatre through the ages. Sword fighting, stage combat, music, costume and farce will all add to the mix to make an unforgettable experience. The resulting scenes and monologues will be staged as a free form play at the end of the session.

“Theatre for Techie” for students in grades 7-12 will be held June 14-15, 18-19 and 21, 2012. Tech camp students explore the other half of the world of theatre and learn what goes on behind the scenes. Students will receive training in lighting, sound, and design from guest artists, and then use their skills to design and run the final performance.

Camp tuition varies between $110-165, depending on camp, and early bird discounts are available.  For more information, visit HersheyAreaPlayhouse.com or contact Cory Wilkerson at cory@dramainside.net.
