HACC Professor’s Book Project Recognized by Her Alma Mater in the Philippines

WHO:  Joy Garcia Tien, associate professor of counseling at HACC’s Lancaster Campus
WHAT:  Feature story idea on Tien, who has been chosen one of 50 ATOM (A Tribute to Outstanding MaScians) Awardees by a group of distinguished panel of judges from the academe, government service and fellow alumni at Manila (Philippines) Science High School. The notice sent to Tien reads, “… we honor fellow MaScians who have not only made a name in their respective fields by their gift of intellect but have also lived up to the ideals of Manila Science by their heartfelt life of service to society.”
WHEN: The award will be presented at the school’s 50th Anniversary gala night on Oct.12, 2013, at the campus in the Philippines.
WHERE:  In Manila, Philippines
COVERAGE:  Among the reasons Tien was nominated for the award is because of an ongoing book project she started three years ago during a sabbatical to the Philippines. She collected boxes of unwanted educational books and magazines from her colleagues at HACC’s Lancaster and Harrisburg campuses to distribute to educational institutions while she was there in 2010. The campus bookstore and Student Government Association at HACC’s Lancaster Campus donated to the project. She still is involved in the project.

Tien is available to talk about her project and the award. At this time, she is not planning to be in Manila for the presentation.
