Council Offers Summer Schedule of Art Camps and Classes for Young People

The Council for the Arts of Chambersburg will offer art camps and classes for young people this summer at its 159 South Main Street site. Summer Camps for Kids

All camps run Monday through Friday from 9:30am – 12 noon, cost $125 (with 10% discount for 2nd child) and are open to children who have completed grades K-5.

July 8-12: Giants and Fairies, with Instructor Kristen Pixler

Spend a week creating art projects exploring contrasts, such as scale and proportion…giant and tiny! Children will use a variety of materials and learn new techniques to create 2D and 3D works of art.

July 15-19: Printmaking with Instructor Dee Henry

If you have ever noticed the mark the sole of your shoe makes in mud, you have entered the wild world of printmaking! Using everything from found objects to traditional printmaking supplies, children will explore a variety of printmaking processes and make some very creative projects!

August 5-9: Creatures and Monsters!! with Instructor Kristen Pixler

Learn about and create imaginary and mythological creatures! Children will use their imaginations while learning new artistic techniques to create 2D and 3D scary and /or cute critters! 

Weekly Classes for Kids

Tuesdays, July 9-30, 3-4:30 pm: Introduction to Knitting with Instructor Nancy Walker

Knitting is one of the trendiest hobbies today!  Students will develop basic skills in the art of knitting including how to make a slip knot, cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch and bind off.  Once students learn these basic skills, they will have an opportunity to learn how to knit an African Duduza (comfort) doll in which they will use skills of math, reading, design, fiber and color selection.

Ages: 8-11 (parents welcome!)

Price: $45 for 4-week session

Wednesdays, July 31-August 21, 6-8:30 pm            : Cartooning and Comic Book Characters 101 ! with Instructor Hannah Stephey
Students will each create and design a protagonist, antagonist, and creative cartoon world where their story takes place, and then will create their own “zine”, a miniature comic book with these characters that they can take home with them at the end of the course! Examples and materials will be provided.

Ages: 11 & up

Price: $75 for 4-week session

The Council also continues to offer birthday parties, providing the materials & art instruction for an age-appropriate project with a wide array of themes for ages 5-8 (10 children maximum) and for ages 9-12 (12 children maximum).  Host parents are required to stay throughout.
