Create a Chocolate Beach Bar and Unlock Chocolate’s Ancient Past at The Hershey Story Museum

This summer, The Hershey Story, The Museum on Chocolate Avenue introduces a new seasonal class in the Chocolate Lab and brings back Maya Chocolate Adventure, a guest-favorite activity.

In the Chocolate Lab, guests can experience the new “Chocolate Beach Bars” class. Participants design their very own seashore-themed milk chocolate bar using ingredients, such as edible decals, graham cracker “sand” and sea salt.  During the class, guests also learn where and how cacao is grown, harvested and processed into chocolate.

Additional themed classes held for the summer include: “Build a Bar,” “Chocolate by Design,” “Planet Chocolate” and “S’mores Galore.” In recognition of Independence Day, guests of the Chocolate Lab can create their own edible American flag in the “Yankee Doodle Chocolate Bars” class on Wednesday, July 4. Chocolate Lab classes are 45 minutes, and multiple classes are held daily.

Beginning on Thursday, June 28, visitors can trek through a simulated rainforest in the Maya Chocolate Adventure activity located in the museum’s special exhibit gallery. Kids experience a series of five activity stations as they discover how the Maya people first used chocolate.

Activities include unearthing puzzle pieces to form a hieroglyph, grinding chocolate beans using mortar and pestle, identifying hidden cocoa pods in a Maya art mural, and simulating the ancient Maya custom of creating foam on a chocolate beverage using frothing sticks called “molinillos.” New this year, kids will also have an opportunity to write their names “Maya-style.” This activity is held daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Monday, September 3. Cost is $5 per participant; accompanying adults are free.
